Keep your employees fit and healthy at work. Reduce sick days and increase production.
In the words of Joseph Pilates “This very rapidly progressing world with its ever-increasing faster tempo of living demands that we be physically fit and alert in order that we may succeed in the unceasing race with keen competition which rewards the go-getter but by-passes the no-getter”.
The benefits of exercise are well-documented and researched. Exercise at work with a qualified, registered and experienced instructor for as little as 10 minutes a day will improve productivity and profitability. See 4 BIG UK businesses that do care about employees’ wellbeing.
How and Why?
- Emulate the Times top 100 employers by providing health, fitness and wellbeing at work. The Times top 100 are the cream of Britain’s motivated workforces “What they have in common is enlightened and forward-looking leaders investing in the well-being and motivation of their most valuable assets: their employees”.
- Invest in your workforce and your workforce will invest in you: Investors in people “When employees feel connected to the organisation, they invest more of themselves in it. Investing in people pays through the choices they make, the service they give and the results they deliver.
- Reduce stress at work with a Stress Buster session
- Reduce sickness absence by introducing regular daily exercise
- Improve job satisfaction and staff retention by investing in your workforce with a health and well-being workshop. Survey results: 30,000 employees across 15 countries; 64% of employees who perceive their employer as an active promoter of health and wellness intend to stay at least 5 years.
- Take an active approach to back care with The Back Care Programme (changing the chair or desk is only part of the solution)
- Increase productivity with a more alert and active workforce by introducing Power Breaks
The research and facts:
Stress and low back pain conditions lead to absenteeism and cost companies many thousands of pounds. 131 million days were lost due to sickness absences in the UK in 2013. Minor illnesses were the most common reason given for sickness absence, but more days were lost to back, neck and muscle pain than any other cause. (Ref: Office for National Statistics – Sickness Absence in the Labour Market, February 2014).
Stress can hit anyone at any level of the business, and recent research shows that work-related stress is widespread and is not confined to particular sectors, jobs or industries.
Where the job unavoidably contains spells of intensive display screen work (whether using the keyboard or input device, reading the screen, or a mixture of the two), these should be broken up by periods of non-intensive, non-display screen work. Breaks must allow users to vary their posture. Exercise routines that include blinking, stretching, and focusing the eyes on distant objects can be helpful.
“A study in the Lancet medical journal showed that physical inactivity worldwide has been labelled as “pandemic” and that regular exercise is just as good for you as stopping smoking.”
The BHF National Centre recommends that policymakers support and encourage employers to take steps to minimise sedentary behaviours among employees, including regular breaks from sitting at a computer.
